Granholm Really Signs An E-Commerce Bill

A new law allows in-state and out-of-state wineries to sell directly to customers through new commerce methods, including the Internet.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed legislation while on a trip to Traverse City, which will allow Michigan and out-of-state wineries to ship their products directly to customers in limited amounts.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Michigan policy of only allowing in-state wineries to ship directly to Michigan residents, making online sales only available to Michiganders.

The Supreme Court challenge provided an interesting case highlighting how new electronic and Internet commerce practices are affecting the sale and shipment of goods and services--even those traditionally which have been state-controlled.

Under the new law, any winery can send up to 1,500 cases a year to Michigan residents.

"The Internet is simply changing the way businesses are transacting with their customers," states Philip L. Ellison, a web designer and founder of Hemlock-based Quagmire Solutions, LLC. "The Internet continues to open new markets and opportunities for businesses in our state, across the nation, and throughout the world."

Wine drinkers contend that consumers will benefit from greater choice and convenience from being able to order directly online.
